It is strictly for TV numbers to increase for the first round and viewers to be tuned in for Zion vs. Giving them a chance to play a few teams for that spot highly increases their chances. But this is clearly the option the NBA wants, just so they can get Zion and the Pelicans into the playoffs. Lastly, we have the option of “having a play-in tournament for Western Conference 8th seed.” This one is intriguing, although if we do a play-in tournament, I would rather see it league wide. Of the 4 potential scenarios, this one to me is the one that is the least realistic. Their top handful of teams are league powers with a lot of potential but after that, it can drop off in a hurry. There is still a chance the Eastern Conference could have the best team though. Over the last several years, more of the leagues better players have migrated to the Western Conference. ![]() Even though all of us as NBA fans realize most of the league’s best teams are out in the West. It is the only one where the Eastern Conference would not be fairly represented. The Eastern Conference GMs would vote this option down quicker than the others. But then you get a chance of having three-fourths of the team being from the Western Conference, so just for that, I do not see this option as a serious threat to happening. It would be a joy as well to watch basketball games all day, for a week while we watched the games play out.Īnother scenario the NBA is mulling over is “re-seeding playoffs 1-16 by record regardless of conference.” This to me would be a better option too. I like this option a lot because it would be different for the NBA determining playoff teams. Playing with this option would be an excellent experiment for the NBA to give the teams a new playing experience. The top 20 teams in league standings drawn out after the top 8 seeds were placed. I believe groups would be put together by rankings throughout the entire league. This would provide a unique experience for maybe a few lower seeded teams to have a hot stretch for a week and to make it into the quarterfinals of the NBA playoffs. I believe this would be a lot of fun and would be modeled after how the World Cup is played. The top 2 seeds remaining after that would be the 8 playoff teams and then the league would play from that group. There would be 4 groups of 5 teams playing games all day, every day for about a week. “Divide league into groups and have round-robin play to determine participants.” This would be great for NBA fans to view because there would be about 20 teams involved playing in a round robin tournament to determine the 8 playoff teams. If they want to get more fancy and start tournaments for teams that are close to making it in, then we can talk and explore those opportunities.Įxpanding on the other playoff opportunities the NBA has explored we have another option. At the minimum, this is the option I think the NBA should start with. In my opinion, there is no need to get the players back to play any more regular season games. This is an option I believe the NBA must start with. This one for the NBA would be traditional standings with current playoff teams coming back to play and starting the playoffs. ![]() Although they kicked the rest of the regular season, they also are attempting a round robin tournament as well. This would be following up a little bit of what the NHL did this week too. The first format that Zach Lowe spoke about this morning is the option for the NBA to “forego remainder of regular season and use traditional format with current standings.” To start with this one, it was something I pushed for earlier this week. They have some exciting and interesting scenarios to choose from. This will all be good for basketball though, and whichever direction they choose to go, I am patiently waiting the return of the NBA. These teams and players can be better protected by staying in one or a two different cities to stay safe and protected. I just do not see any real need for the NBA to return and play anymore regular season games. I laid out a scenario on Twitter earlier this week with a few ideas I had. I am going to breakdown these options and try to determine which option is the best for the NBA and its fans. This morning on Get Up, Zach Lowe had reported the NBA playoff scenarios for the 2020 season. I believe they have several good options and cities prepared to host. The NBA has had whispers a few times, pertaining to the return of basketball. Photo by: ESPN/Get Up (According to Zach Lowe)
